Caustic Storage Tank
FTPI 2007-1 recommends that an integrity tank inspection be
performed by a certified tank inspector every 20 years for
tanks/vessels in Hazardous Substance service.
The subject photographs were taken during an internal inspection of
a 20 year old 20,000 gallon 30% sodium carbonate aqueous solution
tank located in Texas that was weeping the solution from the bottom
knuckle. An internal inspection showed Barcol hardness deterioration
and crazing of the interior resin corrosion barrier. The first
photograph is of the interior shell wall using a 7 pixel resolution
camera. The photograph shows resin crazing and where a piece of
resin was removed with a blunt instrument. The second photograph is
of the exterior shell wall above the bottom knuckle. The photograph
shows the exterior resin coat has deteriorated and exposed glass
fibers. The resin and glass fiber matrix could be scraped away with
a blunt instrument and the tank was replaced before catastrophic
failure could occur.
